Backgrounds of Business Buyers in the ETA Space
In my time working with business buyers, I've seen that they come from all sorts of backgrounds.
While many on social media talk about the prototypical consultant turned SMB buyer, that's just one of the many types I've people who went the ETA route. Today I wanted to highlight a few of the most interesting paths I've seen..
Buying a business is more reachable than you may think as a first-time buyer.
While many of the buyers that we work with at Pioneer Capital Advisory do come from finance (investment banking or private equity) backgrounds, we have seen buyers enter the ETA space from all different paths.

I want to illustrate how there is no "right" background for buying a business. In fact, your unique combination of experiences may just be the perfect fit for a certain company that a typical consultant or former banker wouldn't be able to succeed with.
Here are a few examples:
Military ➡️ top MBA program ➡️Buying a business
Pioneer Capital Advisory worked with a buyer named Nick Wheeler who has been featured in the Acquiring Minds podcast (listen to Nick Wheeler’s full Acquiring Minds podcast episode; this was recorded before his recent successful deal, and focuses on a previous deal he pursued that died).
Nick went from serving the country in the military to going to Harvard for his MBA, and then started a full-time search.
Military ➡️ Corporate America ➡️Buying a business
This specific buyer will remain anonymous in this article based on his request, but his career path was as follows: He served in the military, then went to work at a top military defense contractor, and then most recently closed on the acquisition of a business in the Southeast.
Consulting➡️Buying a garden center
Meet Rory Tyer, who worked at a boutique consulting firm and decided to embark on his ETA journey after attending the Southeast ETA conference in Charlottesville, Virginia in September 2022.
He bought a garden center business in South Carolina earlier this year. He was also featured on Will Smith’s Acquiring Minds podcast, which you can listen to here.

Product Management ➡️ Business a demolition business
Charles Miller went from working at McMaster-Carr (hardware supply company) in Chicago and also worked at Snapchat (now Snap). Charles came across the concept of ETA from friends, discovered the world of SMB Twitter, and ended up acquiring a demolition company in Colorado Springs, CO in late 2023.
I actually sat down with him a few months ago and recorded a behind-the-scenes look at his business and the process of acquiring it. Give it a watch here.
